About

Joseph Batrouney.

Drawing on early listening experiences of Middle Eastern music, the rigorous foundation of formal drum study, and the rawness of flamenco, percussionist Joseph Batrouney creates music that evokes a visceral response in listeners.

A life shaped by rhythm.

Joseph credits the ability to unlock lessons from mentors such as Nate Smith (NYC), Israel 'Piraña' Suárez (Spain), and Simon Barker (AUS) to nine years of combined residency experience at Lustre Lounge and later Kanela Bar, alongside his time living and performing in Spain.

These formative experiences opened the door to collaborations with Arte Kanela Flamenco, Paco Lara, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Shakuhachi Grand Master Riley Lee, Latin Grammy-nominated artist Diego Guerrero, and flamenco legend Jorge Pardo (flautist for Paco de Lucía, Camarón, and Chick Corea).

For Joseph, music is more than vocation, it is a lens through which he understands the world. His teaching and playing is defined by honesty, colour, and a sound that is unmistakably his own.
